OVERVIEW OF EARLY CHILDHOOD CONSULTING PROGRAM:

Early Childhood Consulting is a new grant the Pennyroyal Center received in December 2018 in response to the Opioid Crisis. Unfortunately, Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) births (births where the infant experiences withdrawals) have increased by over 1,000 births annually in the last 15 years. In 2001, NAS births were calculated at 46 births. In 2016, there were approximately 1,100 NAS births.

As the Early Childhood Consultant (ECC) I work with, not only pregnant women, but mothers and children (ages 0-18 years old) who suffer from a substance use disorder or who may be at-risk of developing a substance use disorder. ECC’s consult and refer pregnant, parenting females, or children to various programs that may be beneficial to their individual needs to include:

-Early Childhood Mental Health (a specialist who specializes in ages 0-5 years of age who may be showing signs of aggression, autism, trauma, abuse, or other concerning behaviors)

-School-Based Services (to include therapeutic services within the schools for school-aged children)

-Genesis-West (a short-term, 28 day residential treatment center for women over the age of 18 in substance use)

-Trilogy Center for Women (a long-term residential treatment center for women over the age of 18 in substance use)

-IMPACT (a service coordination service for ages 3-21 years of age who are severely emotionally disabled (SED) and are in need of assistance/support medically, socially, educationally)
